Mixed martial artist Ulka Sasaki (34), who will make his wrestling debut at Pro Wrestling Noah's "MONDAY MAGIC Episode 3" which will be held at Shinjuku FACE on Monday November 13th, attended an on the spot interview. He says it was the Muta vs Nakamura match at Noah that solidified his desire to take on the challenge of professional wrestling, and he expressed his enthusiasm for his new ring, saying, "I want to do it with the mindset of a rookie".
Ulka is one of Japan's best MMA fighters, who is currently active in RIZIN. He also has experience of working in the world's top MMA promotion, UFC, and in May this year he defeated overseas powerhouse via judges decision at RIZIN 42, demonstrating his ability. Ulka appeared in the ring of "MONDAY MAGIC EPISODE 2" held on the 23rd of this month, and announced that he would be participating in an exhibition match. At the beginning of today's interview, Ulka talked about his wrestling challenge and explained the process, "I got a chance about a year ago, I was thinking about doing general training until I was around forty years old, but because of connections and circumstances, I decided to do it." He said he was determined to take on the challenge because he was moved to action by The Great Muta vs Shinsuke Nakamura match that took place at Pro Wrestling Noah's Nippon Budokan event on January 1st of this year. Ulka says he may fight in MMA if he has a chance, but he says his future direction is to focus on professional wrestling. When asked about the appeal, he said, "It's the work quality of professional wrestling. It's the same with MMA, but you connect the dots as a story, and I think the appeal of professional wrestling is that you can bring out that quality even more".
Until now, Ulka has fought in the 60kg range in MMA at bantamweight and featherweight, but he has now increased his weight to the 90kg range for professional wrestling, or even the 100kg range. He has reviewed his training from scratch before entering the pro wrestling ring, "I want to gain weight, so I've been eating a lot. I've also changed the content of my training quite a bit, changing from movement based to weight lifting". When asked about the reactions of his family, friends and fans, he said, "I thought there would be more criticism, but there were a lot of supportive opinions saying, "I think that's the right thing to do, isn't it?" But my family said, "Don't do it". The reason is that it is dangerous, and I was hit with the argument that it wouldn't be a good idea to leave behind the career that I have built up until now, and jump into a place with different skills". He added with a big smile, "But I want to do it, so I won't listen". His long awaited debut match is in two weeks. Perhaps because of the fact that it's good to know your opponent in the exhibition match right beforehand, Ulka quickly and honestly expressed his feelings saying quickly and honestly, "I'm nervous", "I'm really anxious" and, "Seriously, fighting is difficult, but fun". On the other hand, when asked what kind of professional wrestling he would like to display he said confidently, "I don't want to rely on the way I've shown in my MMA fights so far. If I rely on striking, or rely on grappling because I can do that, then I probably won't grow as a professional wrestler. I'm still in a newbie position, so I want to do this like a rookie".
It will be interesting to see what Ulka will show in his new ring as he tries his hand at professional wrestling.
