(NOAH) Naomichi Marufuji vs Kaito Kiyomiya - GHC Heavyweight match signing

Weekly Pro Wrestling's March 20, 2019 issue, No. 2001

Translated by Dino (purodino)

"The scariest, most troublesome Marufuji to date will emerge." (Marufji)

"Ahead, beyond Marufuji, there is a true new era." (Kiyomiya)

On February 25 at Roppongi's Hard Rock Cafe Tokyo, the GHC heavyweight public match signing ceremony took place. Champion Kaito Kiyomiya and challenger Naomichi Marufuji made the following comments.

Marufuji: At the end of the main event, I'll be the one wearing the belt. Since it will be a new start for me too, please, everyone, by all means cheer for Kaito Kiyomiya.

Kiyomiya: First of all I will defend this belt, then I think I want to settle things completely with the older generation. I'm the face of NOAH now. I'm rushing to the top, together with all of you.

— Your left arm was attacked?

Kiyomiya: Because it was a first for me to be continually attacked the whole time in one spot, there was some anxiety. But the feeling that I want to go beyond Marufuji exceeds it, I want to offset it with that feeling.

— Standing in Yokohama Cultural Gymnasium as champion?

Kiyomiya: It's not just Yokohama Cultural Gymnasium, I think, in the countryside too, I want to attract more and more new fans and children and such, I want to change the landscape. By the next time we're at Yokohama Cultural Gymnasium, even, I already want to be creating a new landscape.

— What was the effect of the preliminary matches?

Marufuji: Since the left arm steadily received my assault yesterday, next time the leg will take it. Next is the leg, let's go, leg.

Though up to now, in title matches and tournaments for example, he's probably gotten results against strong wrestlers, one form is a match where both sides use things they normally possess, there's that way of attacking, as a matter of fact it's been done that way since long ago. If he wants to create new things, he has to experience old things too.

— What about your attachment to the green mat?

Marufuji: Of course, I have a fondness for it, more than that, there are fans who care about it even more than we do. But the green for instance, NOAH's history, is etched perfectly into our hearts. Because I think NOAH is the place for me, whether the color of the mat changes or the people around me change, it's not particularly an issue.

— And what about the changes in the organization?

Kiyomiya: I want to keep on showing new things all the time, as for me that's what I think. The whole course of events is carrying us in a positive direction. I think it's fate that Marufuji is my opponent, and ahead, beyond Marufuji, there is a true new era.

— You'll attack the one who administered your entrance exam?

Marufuji: Because since he was in diapers I've been wrestling, and now he's actually the one holding the belt. But since I think it's probably a first for NOAH up to now to have such a refreshing champion, I too have the feeling that I want him to grow up in a splendid way and make us an era. But while I'm firmly conveying that message, I have the feeling I'm going to win this time.

— Are there similarities with your match with Misawa?

Marufuji: I had been Misawa's assistant for a long time, and I had the feeling of wanting, sometime, to challenge Misawa, the champion who I had been watching since the time I was a fan. Amid that, as champion myself, the situation arose where Misawa challenged me. Of course, you never know what will happen in the pro wrestling world, under these circumstances, if it's said there are similarities, this time it's a match with just as much weight, we have to leave behind a history-making match. That time, in the end, I lost, and if history repeats itself it means this time I'll win.

— What do you think about Kiyomiya's transformation?

Marufuji: I think his sense of responsibility is coming out at a young age, and now he's in a state where he can take in everything like a sponge, he's growing up every day. I'm definitely not like that, and I'm jealous too, but I also think, hey, he has a long way to go. As I'm having various thoughts, my hopes for this match aren't just about winning and losing, if I can include different things for us to see I think it will be interesting.

— Now that the signing ceremony is over, what are your impressions?

Marufuji: I think it would be good to lay it all out if I didn't appraise the situation at full scale or think about it too hard. But if you foolishly think too much and assess it at life size, it probably starts to ring false. Because I don't want to fight Kiyomiya, who's weak as a champion, I hope to properly put things in order.

— How's your condition after making your return?

Marufuji: It has no impact, right? I was made to have a good rest. Because I'm also not stupid, I thought since before I returned I had to show something had changed. Even that key lock from yesterday, I'd been thinking about it for a while, you know. I thought, isn't there more to the key lock, and the timing was perfect.

— It will be a GHC fight with a version of you we haven't seen up to now?

Marufuji: His fans have to cheer hard for him, or else his heart will break. That time is the time he'll lose. It's not just his arm and leg, his heart will break. Perhaps the scariest and most troublesome Marufuji to date will emerge, won't he?

— How about Kiyomiya's shortcomings?

Marufuji: He's full of shortcomings. It's everything. There's no way to pick something now, everything is lacking, I dare say. And he probably wants to grow up himself, too. As the senior wrestler, that's also an especially fun part.

— What will you pay attention to?

Marufuji: His drop kick, I think. To the extent that it's beautiful, I wonder if it's not really that intense. Because a dropkick that can change the course of events in one blow is a great thing. And then after that, getting hit with the Tiger Suplex. If I don't get taken by surprise, normally I'll win. That's what I'm expecting to see.

— What will you aim for if you become champion?

Marufuji: As NOAH goes on to change, I'll stand at the vanguard, and precisely because I create things that are easy to understand from anyone's eyes, I think the fans will also enjoy what unfolds from now on. For the sake of the company, first of all I have to stand at the top.
