Naomichi Marufuji is the last pupil of Giant Baba, and many wrestlers and related people highly appreciate his genius. In addition to Pro Wrestling Noah, he has had a number of famous matches outside the promotion and internationally.
At the age of 40 he will be waiting to achieve even more success.
Proof at the top, the GHC Heavyweight Championship
As of this fall, the title is currently being held by the young and energetic Kaito Kiyomiya (23), who made his debut in 2015. Some would say that the older pro wrestling fans would have seen his name for the first time here.
In 2004 and 2005, Noah ran the Tokyo Dome. Even on the internet fans were saying, "Noah is the only one". It was a major promotion with enthusiastic fans.
Looking at the box office results now, the audience rarely exceeds 1,000.
In the past running the Nippon Budokan was the norm for Noah's big matches, but now Korakuen Hall and the Yokohama Cultural Gymnasium are the best. Even they seem to be struggling to attract customers there.
The turning point was probably the death of Mitsuharu Misawa in June 2009. The tragedy in the ring cast a dark shadow over Noah as a whole, and Kenta Kobashi, who was a pillar of the group alongside Misawa, continued to miss time due to injury and then the detection of kidney cancer.
In 2006, before Misawa died, Naomichi Marufuji was preparing for the change in generations such as winning the GHC Heavyweight title. In the end, Misawa won it back in 2007.
In December 2009, and despite suffering from a right knee ligament rupture, during the day he main evented Noah, and in the evening he participated in Super J Cup, winning the event with three matches.
"The best part of 2010 was New Japan Pro Wrestling, when I took the IWGP Junior Heavyweight title from the 4th generation Tiger Mask at Tokyo Dome, and defeated the New Japan juniors one after the other for about half a year."
What was disappointing was the repeated absences due to injuries both before and after this. This affected not only Noah itself, but also his ability to wrestle outside of the promotion.
"Noah at that time was already suffering from poor performance, so for Marufuji to participate in other groups this may have been done with the intention of building up outside goodwill. In a sense, he sacrificed himself to support the promotion, which may be said to be the same as his teacher, Misawa."
Outside he would fight as a junior, in Noah he would face giant opponents like Takeshi Morishima, so the burden on his body would have been substantial.
Nonetheless, Marufuji turned 40 this year in September, and is the same as Shinsuke Nakamura who is in WWE, and is therefore not old enough to be aging.
Many fans expect Marufuji to play the leading role and shine, not only as the wall against Kiyomiya.
