(ALL JAPAN) Lucha Libre Latest News! All Japan duo Koshinaka and Misawa are aiming for the National Tag Titles
17th April 1984 (Issue No.37)
The All Japan duo of Shiro Koshinaka and Mitsuharu Misawa, who began fighting in *EMLL at Arena Mexico on March 16th (local time) have already become popular.
The mainstay of the promotion, Sangre Chicana, has fallen ill and relinquished the UWA World Light Heavyweight title, and is currently hospitalized and receiving treatment. However, new rivalries have sprung up between Koshinaka, Misawa, Anthony Bennett*, El Satánico and Pirata Morgan. Some have said that it would be interesting to have Koshinaka or Misawa challenge for the NWA World Middleweight Champion Satanion, and thus avoiding Lizmark's "Revancha" (return match), but Koshinaka and Misawa, who want to compete in the junior heavyweight class or above in the future, are daring to do so, but the question is whether or not to attempt to make weight.
There is a strict weight system, that is unique to Mexican wrestling (just like in boxing, where there is a strict weight system, weigh-ins take place on the day of the title match in the presence of a commissioner. If an athlete is over the weight limit, they are disqualified (as is the case with EMLL), which is a sticking point. However, Salvador Lutteroth II (the representative of EMLL) suggested, "Since you have come all the way here as a duo, why not try for the tag titles first?" Speaking of tag team titles, it goes without saying that the Mendoza brothers, Ringo* and Cachorro, have been holding the National Tag Team Titles ever since they won them two years ago. They haven't been making many defenses recently, because there aren't many teams that look like they can break through the Mendoza brothers' solid defense. Lutteroth II hopes to revive the popularity of the tag team by having a showdown between the Mendoza brothers, and the All Japan duo, even though they are both from Limpio, Paraguay. Considering the nature of the National Championship (foreign wrestlers are not eligible to challenge in singles matches), there may be some problems with Koshinaka and Misawa challenging, but it may be that Lutteroth II, who prioritizes unique policies, will make tag matches exception to the rule.
Due to the nature of the National Championship, if the tag team rivalry intensifies, then it could lead to Ringo's NWA World Light Heavyweight Championship. Until Chicana's return, Los Tirarios (Lobo Rubio, Black Terry* & Jose Luis Feliciano*) had been wreaking havoc in UWA, a strategy aimed at stabalizing their popularity with "Mexico Contrajapon" (Mexico vs Japan), but disbanded after losing in the El Toreo 6 Man Tag Team Championship Tournament, this is contrast to the hugely popular space alien trio of Los Fantasticos, Solar 1, Ultraman, and Spell Astro.
Notes
Anthony Bennett: Weekly Pro called him "Tony", but as to most people this means the singer, I have chosen to call him Anthony to avoid any confusion.
EMLL: Now CMLL
Ringo Mendoza & Black Terry were Daga's trainers.
Jose Luis Feliciano: Given in the article as Jose Feliciano, I have chosen to give him his full name to avoid confusion with the Mexican singer of the same name.
