(ALL JAPAN) Shoichi Suzuki's Weekly Review
28th August 1984 (Issue No.56)
A "Junior Heavyweight War" will break out during All Japan Pro Wrestling's Super Power Series (August 23rd at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo until September 12th at Mito City Gymnasium in Ibaraki)! On August 26th at the Denen Coliseum in Tokyo, the International Junior Heavyweight Championship match between champion Mighty Inoue and challenger Atsushi Onita (Inoue's fourth title defense) will be held. However, it has also been announced that a new World's Strongest Junior Tag League will be held on June 30th with five teams taking part, starting at the Daiei Nishi-Urawa special venue in Saitama and running until the final show. Giant Baba, Chairman of All Japan Pro Wrestling, which planned the tag league, explained, "Tiger Mask will be appearing, so we decided to form a business partnership with Mexico's UWA. The junior heavyweight division will be recognized again by fans, so we came up with a new event".
New Japan Pro-Wrestling gained popularity during the last Summer Fight Series when The Cobra defended the NWA World Heavyweight Championship and Dynamite Kid defended the WWF World Heavyweight Championship. Hiro Matsuda, who participated in the series, and in the 1960s was the first Japanese to win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship (and later won it again), said, "I envy the current era," and was pleased with the recognition shown by fans of the junior heavyweight class. I previously wrote in this column (February 28th issue) "Walk with confidence! J-Heavyweight wrestlers!" This will become a reality in the next All Japan series.
It's impossible to predict who will win the tag league. The fact that there are many unique teams adds to the interest of the junior heavyweight division, but there is also another interest. At the press conference, Chairman Baba made the noteworthy statement that "Tiger Mask will not be competing this time, but he may team up and compete in the future." This may be evidence that the plan to create a new Tiger Mask image (sibling team) is progressing. In any case, Sayama Satoru's Tiger Mask marked a period in the junior heavyweight division, and we have high hopes for his future classmates.
