(NOAH) The Green Guide to Global League 2018

EVENT DETAILS
Participating wrestlers are divided into two blocks, A and B, each match will last thirty minutes. The league is run in a round-robin style. The two wrestlers who have scored the highest in each block will meet to determine the winner, who will then challenge the GHC Heavyweight champion for the title.
There is nothing to prevent the GHC Heavyweight champion from participating (however, in 2017 when Eddie Edwards was the champion he did not due to his schedule with IMPACT, although in a way this suited Noah to have him out of the way). Should the GHC Heavyweight Champion find himself in the finals either the match will be a title match, or if his opponent wins, he will be eligible for a shot at the title.

The league was won in 2017 by Kenoh.

Scoring
Win: 2 points
Draw: 1 point
Defeat: 0 points

TOUR RECAP

PROLOGUE
Takashi Sugiura spoke on the microphone after defeating Katsuhiko Nakajima on the 10th October, telling the participants in Global League 2018 to keep their pants on; nothing would be decided until November, and until then, he warned "the young people" to start practicing.

Noah held the press conference on the 29th October at TFI Friday's in Tokyo, and Atsushi Kotoge turned up in a suit complete with cloak which had a huge Dracula collar and stripes. The biggest friction was between Kenoh and Naomichi Marufuji. Kenoh (who somehow had chosen to sit between Marufuji and Sugiura) started growling he would win the league for the second time, take back his belt from Sugiura, and then after defeating Marufuji twice, he would challenge him for the belt, and then beat him again.
Katsuhiko Nakajima (sitting behind them) smirked.
Takashi Sugiura took no notice (he knows the best way to deal with Kenoh is to ignore him)
Marufuji later addressed Kenoh as "Kenoh-kun" and asked him why he was sitting between himself and "Sugi-chan".
Elsewhere, Sugiura said that Shiozaki wasn't worth it, Shiozaki said he wanted to revenge losing the championship bid earlier in the year, Kiyomiya was polite as ever, the boys from DDT and ZERO-ONE were enthusiastic, Cody Hall said he had the size and the power, and Maybach Taniguchi refused to speak.

Night One
Noah opened the show on the 30th October; from the outset, Kenoh acted badly towards Marufuji, getting in his face when the teams came out for the presentation, and although Marufuji just ignored him, he did wind Kenoh up by holding the rope open for him when they left, which Kenoh glared at and then walked off. Neither Kenoh or Marufuji would have a good night, both being defeated by their opponents, Kohei Sato and Katsuhiko Nakajima. Kenoh being busted open. The younger generation dominated their seniors that evening (aside from Masa Kitamiya losing to Akitoshi Saito).
In the junior division, Kotaro Suzuki defeated Daisuke Harada for the GHC Heavyweight championship, and later said he wanted Marufuji to challenge. Marufuji said he wasn't going to ("now"), and Seiya Morohashi made a bid for the tag titles. Tadasuke has also been vocal about challenging for the GHC Junior title, although Kotaro Suzuki had dismissed any upcoming challengers of the juniors saying they are in "short supply".

At the end of the show (it was broadcast via Nicopro), it was announced that HAYATA would be challenging for the GHC Junior Heavyweight, and that management had decided on him out of the three RATELS, as HAYATA was the one who got in the ring first (and most likely YO-HEY knows to give HAYATA his own way). Match is set for the 17th November.
While naturally HAYATA has nothing to say, Kotaro Suzuki was not happy it, saying that Marufuji was selfish and that HAYATA was being offered up to this selfishness.

Night Two
The first night of Global League took place on the 8th November, as did the GHC Junior Heavyweight match signing. Kotaro Suzuki seemed a little scared of HAYATA as he couldn't get a reaction of of him and said, "I have attended this time, there are many things I would like to say, but saying nothing means that you will express everything in the ring. That is the most difficult part. I expect that is what the challenger will show."
HAYATA said nothing at all.

When the event began, HAYATA trounced Suzuki and finally spoke, saying "same in Osaka". In the Battle Royale, Hitoshi Kumano won the grand prize of a hotel voucher, Disco won the revolution, Nagai lost to Kitamiya, Shiozaki and Higuchi almost bought the building down by two heavyweights crashing into each other, and Kaito Kiyomiya got the shock win over Takashi Sugiura by getting a fluke pin. Kiyomiya could not believe his luck and rolled around the ring, and Sugiura looked in dumb horror at this kid, whose father he was old enough to be, who he had dismissed as not even half a challenge, had beaten him. So far, Sugiura had not been as dominant as he thought he would be in Global League. Kiyomiya, however, had picked up the biggest win so far of his career, and was voted Referee Nishinaga's personal MVP.
Katsuhiko Nakajima was destroyed by a dominant Kohei Sato (despite Nakajima reaching new levels of cockiness by doing the cocky pin with his foot, his knee and sticking his tongue out when smiling creepily).

In the explosive main event, Kenoh finally got his wish to face Naomichi Marufuji (despite whining that it was a waste as it needed to be on a bigger stage) and the action was on from the get go, Marufuji treating Kenoh as if he were a rookie and was able to outsmart him, but Kenoh picked up the win (using the rolling moonsault foot stomp which he doesn't often use), and yelled at Marufuji as he left the ring that everyone had just witnessed his defeat by Kenoh (Marufuji waved him away), Kenoh turned back to the audience and told them that he was "Noah's ray of hope."

Marufuji later commented on Twitter (in two separate posts) to the effect that he is gutted he lost, and that Global League was different this year. He thanked heavens that he was born strong, he would avenge the losses, and Kenoh, you got what you wanted, and he would be waiting.

Night three
I am afraid that I don't have any information about this evening's event, as nothing came out about it (some Japanese fans were upset about the lack of information, especially for something as important as Global League).
However, the only thing I can report on was the fact that Naomichi Marufuji got his first win of Global League 2018, addressed the audience; "My victory starts here in Matsuyama. The young are strong, my generation is strong, Sugiura is also strong...but I will win. I will prove that Naomichi Marufuji is the protagonist of 2018 in the 20 year anniversary. It is up to me how it ends, but who is next? The bald octopus in Hiroshima, tomorrow I will bring him down."
"The bald octopus" of course is Mitsuya Nagai, who will probably challenge for the GHC Heavyweight tag belts with KAZMA SAKAMOTO once Junior League wraps up (although both Marufuji and Saito have both said that Nagai is not going to be granted a title match).
Elsewhere in Global League, Kenoh beat Quiet Storm, Taniguchi beat Kotoge (after Kotoge had tried to lock him in somewhere. No I'm not kidding), Shiozaki beat Cody Hall, and Saito beat Nagai. As for everyone else, Yoshiki Inamura was defeated by Takashi Sugiura in an eight man match (Sugiura is his hero, so he probably loved this first experience in the ring with him), YO-HEY won the three way match and Junta Miyawaki was defeated by Tadasuke.

Atsushi Kotoge throws Maybach Taniguchi through some doors, and then locks him in. Unfortunately for Kotoge, Taniguchi found his way back and Zwei bombed him.

Night four
Noah were in Hiroshima, and had a full crowd of 402 people. The two outside Global League competitors (Kohei Sato and Kazusada Higuchi) continued their dominance with Kaito Kiyomiya saying that Higuchi was "too strong" and Sato steamrolling over Masa Kitamiya and making him bleed.
Elsewhere, Kotaro Suzuki got the win over HAYATA and triumphantly sat on the top turnbuckle and held the belt up to the crumpled challenger and Daisuke Harada. Naomichi Marufuji wound Nagai up by opening the ropes for him, and ultimately defeating him (and chopping him so red that in his post match promo he commented that he "turned red like a boiled octopus", Nagai said that he is not going to run from it. As for Marufuji's tag team partner, his match went to TKO when Katsuhiko Nakajima knocked him out with a kick to the face and then the head, and then stalked him, waiting for him to get up. Later Nakajima was asked if he was going to challenge for the GHC Heavyweight Tag Titles, he smirked and said "who knows?", but he "was in the mood for shopping".

NIGHT FIVE

I am afraid that I don't have a write up of this event as there was no information coming out of it, so I cannot note anything past the results.

Hitoshi Kumano vs Masao Inoue vs Yoshiki Inamura ~ WINNER: Hitoshi Kumano with the Bear Bottom on Yoshiki Inamura (6 mins and 13 seconds)
Go Shiozaki, Kotaro Suzuki, Yoshinari Ogawa & Junta Miyawaki vs Maybach Taniguchi, Cody Hall, HAYATA & Daisuke Harada ~ WINNER: Daisuke Harada with the Katayama German Suplex on Junta Miyawaki (11 minutes and 47 seconds)
GLOBAL LEAGUE: Katsuhiko Nakajima vs Mitsuya Nagai ~ WINNER:Katsuhiko Nakajima (Hurracan Runna, 6 minutes and 50 seconds)
GLOBAL LEAGUE: Atsushi Kotoge vs Kaito Kiyomiya ~ WINNER: Atsushi Kotoge, with what sounds like a new style of move (10 minutes and 42 seconds)
GLOBAL LEAGUE: Naomichi Marufuji, YO-HEY & Tadasuke vs Akitoshi Saito, Hi69 & Minoru Tanaka ~ WINNER: Hi69 with the Stuka Splash on YO-HEY (11 minutes and 41 seconds)
GLOBAL LEAGUE: Takashi Sugiura vs Mohammed Yone ~ WINNER: Takashi Sugiura with the Olympic Slam (11 minutes and 17 seconds)
GLOBAL LEAGUE: Quiet Storm vs Kohei Sato ~ WINNER: Kohei Sato with the German Suplex (10 minutes and 38 seconds)
GLOBAL LEAGUE: Kenoh vs Masa Kitamiya ~ WINNER: Masa Kitamiya with the spear (13 mins and 50 seconds)

Afterwards Kenoh and Masa Kitamiya shook hands.

At the end of the match, Masa Kitamiya got on the microphone and basically explained that he had shaken hands with him as they had both tried to overcome the other, and he did not trust a wrestler who had no ambition.

NIGHT SIX
It was a night of surprises in which both Kazusada Higuchi and Kohei Sato had their seemingly invincible winning streaks ended by two unlikely people, Mohammed Yone and Mitsuya Nagai, respectively, Atsushi Kotoge broke Go Shiozaki's winning streak and Kaito Kiyomiya struggled to regain the momentum he gained over his shock win over Takashi Sugiura.
Kenoh decided that beating Naomichi Marufuji earlier in the league wasn't enough, and decided to get in his face again today during their match, Marufuji (who now has both shoulders taped), looked like he had had enough.
In the main event, Katsuhiko Nakajima avenged his loss last year at Global League 2017 on Quiet Storm, by knocking him out.

Kotaro Suzuki and HAYATA had their final tag match against each other before the title match on the 17th November; neither got the pinfall at all today, and will go into the match both with one win over each other in the pre-matches.

NIGHT SEVEN
The event started off with a sixteen man battle royal, in which Hitoshi Kumano emerged victorious (double pinning his tag team partner, Hajime Ohara and YO-HEY, much to Ohara's surprise), and then winning a cash prize.
In Global League, Quiet Storm beat Mitsuya Nagai, and Kaito Kiyomiya bounced back from his losing streak to defeat Mohammed Yone (Yone later said he felt confused, but gave props to the boy). Go Shiozaki avenged the time limit draw from last year against Maybach Taniguchi, and Naomichi Marufuji (who appears to be being held together by braces on both his shoulders and one of his knees), defeated his tag team partner, Akitoshi Saito. Both bowed afterwards and shook hands.
Takashi Sugiura and Kazusada Higuchi made a menacing tag team and took out Masa Kitamiya (who fans want to see wrestle a singles with Higuchi) and Atsushi Kotoge (who was lunatic enough to challenge Higuchi to a sumo charge). After their match, Higuchi warned Sugiura that he would see him tomorrow in Global League for their match.
Kenoh made good on his promise to defeat Nakajima after the time limit draw last year, and afterwards told the crowd that no matter how tough the match, he would be the one who stands in the ring. He also  said that when he faces Akitoshi Saito tomorrow (who is about number three on his hit list of people\seniors in Noah that he hates), he would finish the job with TWO footstomps.

HAYATA was unsuccessful in his title challenge for the GHC Junior Heavyweight Championship against Kotaro Suzuki, and fell to the Mass Driver after 15 minutes and 44 seconds. After the match, Kotaro Suzuki was challenged by Tadasuke. The title challenge has been set for the 25th November at Korakuen Hall.

NIGHT EIGHT
Noah where three men down tonight as HAYATA, Hi69 and Naomichi Marufuji had all vanished off to different promotions; HAYATA to compete in Zero One (where he advanced to the second round) and Hi69 and Marufuji to Okinawa to face ShujiJoe and GurukunMask.
Yoshiki Inamura celebrated his 26th birthday today, which was announced by Hajime Ohara, and he gave a short speech on the mic to say that he would try his best.
Tadasuke and Kotaro Suzuki clashed in a tag match, but neither managed to get the pin on each other, that was done by YO-HEY on Junta Miyawaki.
In his post match promo, Tadasuke said that if Kotaro Suzuki really wanted to fight Naomichi Marufuji, then he (Suzuki) should create his own box office to do it in, and not use Noah for that purpose.

Maybach Taniguchi threw Yone into some chairs, and a little girl started crying (Yone is very popular with children), the crowd booed Taniguchi for it. He laughed.
Atsushi Kotoge, as the self proclaimed "Revolutionary Hero", has vowed revenge on Taniguchi.

Shiozaki and Kiyomiya clashed, as did former tag team partners Minoru Tanaka and Koji Kanemoto; Kanemoto getting the win over Tanaka, by doing something very rarely done to Tanaka, making him tap out. Elsewhere in Global League, Kenoh defeated Akitoshi Saito and Quiet Storm defeated Masa Kitamiya, whilst in the main event, Takashi Sugiura overcame Kazusada Higuchi. Sugiura has said he cannot afford anymore losses, especially to the "youngsters" who he is now facing.

NIGHT NINE
Both divisions, Junior and Heavyweight, had an interesting evening.

The first match of the evening was stopped after five minutes as Mitsuya Nagai seemed to have knocked out Yoshiki Inamura.

The big news in the Junior division was that there seemed to be some dissent in Special4 (the stable made up of Seiya Morohashi, Hi69, Minoru Tanaka and Yoshinari Ogawa). I'm not too sure of the reasons, but I think it is probably to do with the presence of Kotaro Suzuki, who Ogawa is siding with, despite the fact that Suzuki has said that the Noah juniors are weak compared to his day, and this is not something that has gone down well with everyone except Ogawa (who probably agrees with him). The discord between them led Tadasuke (the most sneaky member of RATELS, who plays the crafty villain), to get the surprise win on Ogawa. Kotaro Suzuki was not amused by this and warned him in a post match promo that what he did comes at a price, and he was going to beat him down and make him pay.
It would not surprise me if after everything wraps up with the challenge by Koji Kanemoto and Hiroshi Yamato for the GHC Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Titles are next challenged for by Kotaro Suzuki and Yoshinari Ogawa.

In the heavyweight division, Kaito Kiyomiya got another surprise win, this time it was over Go Shiozaki; his mentor who had destroyed him in all previous singles matches. He didn't exactly roll around on the floor in celebration, but he did say afterwards that there was a special power in Aizu that had helped his win.
Elsewhere in Global League, Cody Hall beat Mohammed Yone, Kazusada Higuchi beat Atsushi Kotoge, Akitoshi Saito beat Kohei Sato, Takashi Sugiura beat Maybach Taniguchi, and Naomichi Marufuji beat Quiet Storm (whose birthday it was).

NIGHT TEN

It was an evening of upsets as Noah made port for the Block A finals, and set sail tomorrow for Block B and for the final night of Global League to determine the winner at Korakuen Hall on the 25th.

The 22nd November is a day when Noah (and the friends of the man) remember Bison Smith, who died in 2011 of heart failure. Referee Shu Nishinaga said that he was looking down from heaven and watching Noah, he probably would have enjoyed what he saw that evening.

Yoshinari Ogawa ditched his former friends in Special4, and aligned with Kotaro Suzuki. Later Suzuki commented that he was interested in the junior tag team belts to "breathe life into them", and no doubt he would challenge with Ogawa, although he never said anything as much.

In Global League, Akitoshi Saito (a local boy who was played to the ring by a violin) defeated Quiet Storm, thus ending Quiet Storm's Global League, Maybach Taniguchi picked up eight points against Kazusada Higuchi, Mitsuya Nagai caused Kenoh to tap out and told him afterwards that he shouldn't discount the older generation and he was stupid to think he was Noah's "Ray of Hope".
The Aggression clashed, with Katsuhiko Nakajima (of all people) offering his hand to Masa Kitamiya in a gesture of friendship, Nakajima, however, gave him The Arm and then made him tap out to The Prison Lock. Nakajima therefore has not advanced in Global League, and Kitamiya (who didn't have enough to points to win anyway), took pleasure in denying Nakajima this, afterwards he went on a rant about it in a way that would probably give Kenoh a run for his money.

Naomichi Marufuji won Block A by knocking out Kohei Sato so it went to a count out, and so he will face the winner of Block B tomorrow in Yokohama. Due to his deteriorating physical condition (it's got to the point where he can no longer do his jump into the ring upon entry), Boku Pro have termed him "Noah's worn out Genius".
Fans have said they want him to have a rest next year, but since its probably going to be his last year as an active wrestler, its doubtful this will happen.

NIGHT ELEVEN
Noah held the GHC Junior Heavyweight signing today in Yokohama before the event began. Tadasuke said he would fight the match with a clear conscience, to which Kotaro Suzuki replied he would fight the match as he normally did.

The queue for the GHC Junior Tag Team Titles has gotten longer, with The Backbreakers now challenging (as for the GHC Heavyweight Tag Team Titles), Quiet Storm said in his post match promo that 50 Funky Powers would be challenging.

RATELS showed their unity by coming out to "Africa", and Yoshinari Ogawa glared at them. Tadasuke and Kotaro Suzuki didn't manage to get the pinfall on each other, but Ogawa revenged Tadasuke sneak pinning him previously by torturing one of his arms.

It was not just Special4 who have had their falling out, The Aggression have also split too. Katsuhiko Nakajima kicked Masa Kitamiya, and he also got thrown out of the ring by him too apparently at one point. It was said that Kitamiya left after the match and not waiting for his former tag partner.

Kaito Kiyomiya beat Maybach Taniguchi (who had dominated the match) and advanced to eight points which put him on a par with Go Shiozaki and Takashi Sugiura. Mohammed Yone worked on Shiozaki's knackered arms and made him tap out, and Takashi Sugiura had a short comedy match with Atsushi Kotoge, which involved the "Revolutionary"locking him out of the arena, and then sneak pinning him.
So with Shiozaki and Sugiura both eliminated, it was determined that it would be Kaito Kiyomiya, the winner of Block B vs Naomichi Marufuji, the winner of Block A.

Marufuji got on the microphone, and told Kiyomiya that he might be injured (although he's actually saying his neck is getting better and he cannot do his rope jump), but that made no difference, Kiyomiya was not going to get past him.
Kiyomiya, unfortunately, gave a typically bland response, saying that he was going to win the league and then the championship.
The problem with Kiyomiya becoming GHC Heavyweight Champion is not really now his skill (his wins over Sugiura and Shiozaki were flukes, but important ones which proved he was capable of beating them), but his personality, he needs an edge.

NAOMICHI MARUFUJI INJURED

"I am really sorry, I wanted to fight, whatever the condition. The staff, the fans, and Kiyomiya...I am sorry for the inconvenience. I will manage the condition, and return. Please give me a little time."

On the 24th November, Noah announced that under doctors advice, Naomichi Marufuji had been withdrawn from Global League 2018 suffering from a shoulder contusion and a left thigh muscle rupture; the condition had been exacerbated in Yokohama.
Therefore, Noah have announced that there will be a three way match at the beginning of the card at Korakuen Hall on the 25th which will be a three way between Katsuhiko Nakajima, Kenoh and Kohei Sato; all have eight points and have a record of win or loss over\against Marufuji in Global League.

Noah have not announced how long Marufuji will be out for, but I would imagine that he won't be back in Noah until early 2019.

FINAL NIGHT
Noah made an announcement that Kimiya Okada (the other trainee)  will finally be making his debut on December 7th at Korakuen Hall, which is the first night of Noah's last tour of 2018 "Winter Navigation". Okada had not been able to debut due to injury when his fellow trainee Inamura did, and he was naturally very upset. The crowd gave him a rousing cheer.

In the three way match created to compensate for Marufuji's injury, Katsuhiko Nakajima came to the ring smirking, and then sat on the turnbuckle with a big grin on his face. Sato complained to the ref, and Nakajima got down.
Afterwards he let Kenoh and Sato kick each other hard while watching outside the ring. Grinning evilly.
Nakajima won the match and went on to face Kaito Kiyomiya in the finals.

Mitsuya Nagai announced that there would be a new member of "The Hooligans" who would join them at Korakuen Hall. He said it was to do with the fact that none of them could get any results at Global League. Speculation is that it will be MA or even Kimiya Okada (although I doubt that last one, Kimiya is just a very green rookie and could be no use to them).

Akitoshi Saito came to the ring holding both the GHC Heavyweight Tag belts. At the end of the match (in which Kotoge seriously needed to calm down), Shiozaki silently took one of them, and turned to Kotoge, before turning back to Saito and pointing at them.
Saito took the belts and left.

Minoru Tanaka and Hi69 (who has bad knees) successfully defended against Koji Kanemoto and Hitoshi Yamato. Hajime Ohara (who had been on commentary) got into the ring and challenged them on behalf of The Backbreakers. Then when Kouki Iwasaki got into the ring with Seiya Morohashi, Hajime Ohara (made an honorary police chief for the day in Kawasaki) told him to back off or else he would "arrest him for causing obstruction to public business".

Kotaro Suzuki successfully defended against Tadasuke, and then afterwards actually praised him by saying he was the best of a bad bunch (i.e. the Noah juniors). Daisuke Harada got into the ring and challenged Kotaro Suzuki to a rematch for the title. Suzuki made his terms clear, if he won, he got the belt, if he didn't. then he disbanded RATELS.
Daisuke Harada accepted.

Kaito Kiyomiya defeated Katsuhiko Nakajima in an epic match to become the youngest winner of Global League on record at only 22 (and its likely to stay that way). After the match, Takashi Sugiura, (who was at ringside), got into the ring and accepted Kiyomiya's very polite challenge. The match has been set for Sunday December 16th in Yokohama. Kiyomiya told the crowd it was time for a new Noah, and he would be its face.

Naomichi Marufuji later commented:

"Congratulations to Kiyomiya on winning.
And on the title match also.

In the past 20 years, both myself and the company have struggled on stormy seas.
I will be back soon to go that place again."

After the match, Go Shiozaki was seen seconding Nakajima, and not Kiyomiya, giving rise to speculation that it may be Nakajima he teams with, and not Kotoge...

NOTES
  • Daisuke Harada held the belt for for 394 days, and was only eleven days off beating Taiji Ishimori's record of 405. This will be Kotaro Suzuku's third title reign (if you count when he was working the Mushiking Terry gimmick that is). He lost the belt on the 30th October, and then challenged for it again on the 25th November, not even a month apart.
  • Noah announced on the 30th October, that Doug Williams would be returning to Noah for one night only on the 12th December where he would face old rival, Yoshinari Ogawa in Yokohama.
  • There was a cat in the hotel in Ehime, much to the delight of YO-HEY.
  • HAYATA missed some tour dates due to competing in Zero-One, and Hajime Ohara was also missing due to his (strict) training of the Chinese Athletes. Naomichi Marufuji and Hi69 also missed some dates, with Marufuji additionally competing for W-1 in their tag league.
